Fred’s Lounge in Mamou is the Cajun Music Capital of the World. At first glance, it may seem like an ordinary red-brick beer joint. However, every Saturday morning at 9:15, when announcer Mike Perron takes the stage, Fred’s Lounge transforms into a magical place. With a spirited “laissez les bon temps roulez,” Perron kicks off a two-hour radio tradition aired on KVPI (1050AM) from Ville Platte for over 75 years. Despite minimal advertising, this pub, open only on Saturday mornings, has gained global recognition. 

In 2023, Tricia and Christian McGee, a mother-son duo, acquired the business. While they have introduced a Happy Hour on weekdays from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, they remain devoted to preserving Fred’s traditions, culture, and memories, just as authentic as Mr. Fred would have wanted. Fred’s Lounge stands out in many ways, even amidst the abundance of local music programs in southern Louisiana. They serve alcohol as early as 8:00 am, and offer samples of boudin from T’Boy’s, leaving some on the bar for those who missed out. Their spicy Bloody Marys are a popular choice, setting the tone for breakfast at the lounge. 

Fred’s is open only on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with music playing from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Additionally, they host Happy Hours on weekdays from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
